Generation of surface plasmons at single subwavelength slits: from slit to ridge plasmon

چکیده
Understanding how surface plasmons can be launched by single subwavelength structures is crucial for the development of surface plasmonbased devices within highly integrated photonic circuits. In this paper, we study the coupling efficiency of light to surface plasmons for single slits milled in a thin metal film by analyzing the far-field optical images recorded in the Fourier plane of a leakage microscopy setup. A simple model based on a Fano-type interference allows us to give a clear physical interpretation of the plasmonic generation efficiency with an optimum value separating two regimes depending on the size of the system. This is an issue of practical interest in the context of plasmonic features with size close to or smaller than optical diffraction limit.

Plasmon-assisted two-slit transmission: Young's experiment revisited.
We present an experimental and theoretical study of the optical transmission of a thin metal screen perforated by two subwavelength slits, separated by many optical wavelengths. The total intensity of the far-field double-slit pattern is shown to be reduced or enhanced as a function of the wavelength of the incident light beam. This modulation is attributed to an interference phenomenon at each...
متن کاملResonant microwave transmission through individual sub-wavelength slits
It is well established that much more radiation may be transmitted through a set of apertures in a metallic screen than a simple calculation from the transmission through the aperture area alone would predict. There has been substantial debate regarding the exact cause of this enhanced transmission, and confusion over the difference between the behaviour of subwavelength apertures as opposed to...

Employing an interferometric cavity ring-down technique we study the launching, propagation and reflection of surface plasmons on a smooth gold-air interface that is intersected by two parallel, sub-wavelength wide slits. Inside the low-finesse optical cavity defined by these slits the surface plasmon is observed to make multiple bounces. Our experimental data allow us to determine the surface-...
متن کاملEnhancement of spatial coherence by surface plasmons.
We report on a method to generate a stationary interference pattern from two independent optical sources, each illuminating a single slit in Young's interference experiment. The pattern arises as a result of the action of surface plasmons traveling between subwavelength slits milled in a metal film. The visibility of the interference pattern can be manipulated by tuning the wavelength of one of...
متن کاملTheory of surface plasmon generation at nanoslit apertures.
In this Letter, we study the scattering of light by a single subwavelength slit in a metal screen. In contrast with previous theoretical works, we provide a microscopic description of the scattering process by emphasizing the generation of surface plasmons at the slit apertures. The analysis is supported by a rigorous formalism based on a normal-mode-decomposition technique and by a semianalyti...
